After you have a place to crash while in London , you are going to need a mode of transportation. The Underground will mostly offer you the best means of transportation around London . They have a Family Travelcard that will allow you to use the underground as much as you want in one day. This includes the tube, buses (except night buses) and the railways. Tickets are sold with zone sections that dictate where you can travel. For the Family Travelcard, your zones will be indicated on the ticket and you can ride on any service that has the London Transport sign. The London Visitor Travelcard will allow you to travel within all of the zones. You may also get some discounts at attractions with the card. The price is higher but it insures that you will get to see all of London.

Buses are another good way to get around London . One unique thing about the bus system is that everybody must "queue up," or form a single line at the bus stop. The good thing about taking the bus is that you will be able to see more of the city while you are traveling, unlike the underground. The Double-Decker buses are still in existence, but are slowly being phased out. This London icon is slowly disappearing but they still run twenty of the sixty bus routes. To take the bus you must purchase tickets prior to boarding from machines on the side of the road. The driver no longer handles money and the machines do not make change. Buses generally run twenty-four hours a day and most have special night routes. The night buses are very busy and you may have to wait a long time. It may be better to use a cab at night. London cabs may be hailed on the street or you can call for one. Once hailed, they must take you anywhere you want to go within a six-mile radius from your pick-up location. Renting a car and driving in London is about as bad as driving in New York . You can travel just as quickly by walking, taking the Underground or using buses and cabs
