In 1834 in London 's East End , Charles Henry Harrod set up as a modest wholesale grocer in Stepney with a special interest in offering a variety of quality teas. In 1849, Harrod took over a small store in the new district of Knightsbridge, where the modern day store is currently located. He did so to escape the filth and crime of the inner city, while also taking advantage of the foot traffic during the Great Exhibition of 1851 in nearby Hyde Park. [Read more]
